Description
This is what remains of the historic Collier Lodge near Kouts, Indiana. It is the last remaining hunting lodge from the Kankakee River Lodge Period (1880-1900). In 2009, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The grand marshes of the Kankakee River were once refered to as "The Everglades of the North" (Northwest Indiana), and drew hunters from all over. Former Presidents Benjamin Harrison, Grover Cleveland, and it is believed, Teddy Roosevelt all visited the area to hunt. In fact, the lodge used to be known as the "White House Lodge". for more history visit http://www.thekankakeeriver.com/kankakee04.html.
