Description
The Town of Lowell was founded in 1852 by Melvin Halsted. He built a flour mill which was pivital to the economy of South Lake County. Halsted named his new village Lowell because its milling industries resembled the New England town of Lowell, Massachusetts. He also constructed a church, brick schoolhouse, and the first brick house in the Lowell area with 400,000 bricks burned from his own kiln. Melvin and his family moved in to the house in the spring of 1850. The house, which has been restored by the Three Creeks Historical Association, stands at the corner of Main and Halsted Streets. It is the oldest brick home in Northwest Indiana and is open to the public as a museum. Much of the furnishings in the home date from the latter part of the nineteenth century. This is a child's bedroom.
